It doesn’t matter if you are running wires or cables for that fancy new ADT security system, the electric or the television – you need to do it right. Running wire tastefully and making sure that it all remains out of sight is a tall order and it can prove to be a most arduous task when done in some of the older buildings. However, you want to get it right the first time so that you don’t find yourself coming back to it at a later time.
For starters, when you run your wires you are going to want to make sure you don’t use nails or staples to pin them up – not even the ones department stores sell that are specially shaped. No matter the size, these will inevitably pinch the wire to the wall and will, over time, damage the braiding. Instead, use some tape or some clear plastic ties.
And when running wire, be sure to avoid running them underneath rugs and carpets and in high traffic areas. People stepping on the wires will only wear them down in time and could even expose the wiring. If you have wires with exposed braiding underneath rugs it could even cause a fire. Stick to crawl spaces or the ceilings and if that doesn’t work, look into some special materials that will help protect your wiring from treading.
As with most things in life, when running your own wire, it’s important to get it right the first time.
